8th Army 24 Division flag, Okayama Japan, 1946 |
Description |
Flag wall hanging for the 8th Army, 24th Division, 3rd Engineering Combat Battalion, Okayama, Japan, 1946. The division symbol is at the top and Raymond Mrkvicka's name is written above the symbol for an Engineer Corps. The background is a red sun & sixteen red & white rays with yellow fringe on three sides. The design is similar to the Rising Sun Flag, the military flag of Japan, adopted in 1870. It was used as the war flag of the Imperial Japanese Army & the ensign of the Imperial Japanese Navy until the end of World War II in 1945. The flag with 16 rays is today the ensign of the Maritime Self-Defense Force while the Ground Self-Defense Force uses an 8 ray version. The flag is also waved during the Japanese New Year and in sporting events, and incorporated into the flag of Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun and in banners flown by fisherman. |
