Description |
Sepia toned photograph of a wooden barn built by Daniel Cross in 1860. The center structure has a wooden ramp leading to 2 large hinged doors A "lean-to" structure is attached on each end. Doors on the right lean-to have "Z" style bracing. Roof has wooden shingles. Wooden fencing visible on the right. Hand-written on the top front is: Built by Daniel Cross before the Indian outbreak. Daniel Avery Cross and his wife were among the first white McLeod County settlers, arriving in 1857. The barn pictured was built west of Hutchinson on Cedar Lake in 1860, two years before the Dakota Conflict. A Cross daughter was the first female white child born in McLeod County. Daniel Cross was killed by Indians in 1862 while on a scouting expedition. His family took refuge in the stockade. The Cross family was long buried in Oakland Cemetery before the barn succumbed in 1953. |
