Scope & Content |
Scanned laminated map of the Hutchinson Stockade c.1862 showing the grounds and military quarters. The timber stockade eight feet high was completed August 27, 1862 and sheltered over 400 settlers. Soldiers led by Capt. Richard Strout marched from Fort Snelling through Brooklyn Center and other towns on their way to central Minnesota. The 9th Minnesota Volunteer Regiment Company B arrived in Hutchinson just in time for the attack on September 4. After this last major attack, the Dakota Indians headed into the Dakota Territory. The regiment remained in quarters at Fort Hutchinson throughout the winter to heal wounds and protect settlers. Levi Merritt and Winter Jaques, Brooklyn, Minnesota, were ...the wounded. E. D. Kirst drew this diagram of Fort Hutchinson during the winter, indicating the activities performed by the soldiers, including marching, inspection, chopping wood, and guard duty. The next year the men were sent south and faced the Confederates during the last couple years of war. Many were sent to Andersonville Prison following the battle of ...town on June 10, 1864. This map sketch was published in a book "Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center" by Pat Snodgrass. An 1862 pencil sketch of the 9th Minnesota Volunteer Regiment in battle with Native Americans as drawn by Pvt. Kirst also appeared in the book. The sketch was found in the Brooklyn Historical Society files. E. D. Kirst was in Company B of the 9th Minnesota. Born in Germany in 1831, he came to America in 1856 and settled in Hennepin County. He was age 31 when mustered in August 15, 1862 and was mustered out August 24, 1865. E. D. Kirst is listed in "Minnesota in the Civil and Indian Wars, 1861-1865", published in 1891, in the Roster of Company B on p. 442, and in the Minnesota Adjutant General's Report of 1866, p. 230. |
