Description |
Balance beam scale manufactured by N.B. Gaston & Sons, Beloit, Wis. U.S.A. c.1898. Eight parts: wall mount bracket, balance arm, round hanging platform, three 10# weights, wall weight holder, hanging weight holder. The scale was used in the Totusek Store in Komensky. The Gaston Scale Factory was founded by Nathan B. Gaston (born March 17, 1810), who had worked in a ;scale factory in Rochester NY before coming to Beloit, Wisconsin with his father-in-law, A. J. Battin, in September 1844. In Beloit Nathan made scales as N.B. Gaston and later Gaston & Edgar until about 1850. Edgar left for the gold fields in Colorado and N.B. Gaston worked the factory alone until 1875 when it became N.B. Gaston & Son. In 1898 the eldest son Augustine sold out and a new partnership with younger sons Thomas & Theodore was designated N.B. Gaston & Sons. After N.B. died July 16, 1900 the business incorporated as N.B. Gaston's Sons Company on July 20, 1901. |
