Description |
Wooden box trunk. Belonged to Edmund F. Laible when he served in the Second U. S. Cavalry in Cuba during the Spanish American War. He was the grandfather of donor Karen Sather Hendricksen. The trunk was given to Edmund's son George H. Laible in 1925 when he was 17 years old. Edmund Franz Joseph Laible was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 10, 1875. He was the son of George and Marie Hopps Laible. Upon the death of the father George Laible, Marie returned to their former home in Germany. She later came from Germany to Glencoe [c. 1887] with her two sons Edmund and Hugo. Edmund completed his education in the Glencoe High School, and for a time was employed as a bookkeeper. Later he enlisted in the Second U. S. Cavalry and served with the cavalry in Cuba. Following the Spanish American War he returned to Glencoe and in 1900 entered the U. S. Civil Service at Manila, Philippine Island, returning to Glencoe in 1904. On October 3, 1906 he married Henrietta Josephine Rogers, daughter of George & Christina Hohncke Rogers. In 1907 Edmund received appointment as RFD letter carrier at Glencoe. On December 1, 1938 after 31 years as a rural mail carrier he resigned from the postal service. Shortly thereafter he died following surgery at Veterans Hospital, Fort Snelling on his 64th birthday, August 10, 1939. Edmund and Henrietta Laible had two children: George H. Laible, b. 01/06/1907 and Inez M. Laible, b. 07/11/1909. |
