Description |
Watch fob made of human hair. Given to Jesse Benson as a wedding present by his wife Ella Bernard Dixon. They were married September 6, 1899. Fob was made of Ella's hair & has a jeweled locket inscribed JRB in the center. Victorian hair art was once a popular medium for women's handiwork to create jewelry, watchfobs and mourning wreaths. Hair served as a tangible remembrance of someone. Close friends exchanged hair as tokens of friendship. Hair was also sometimes taken after a person's death as a means of honor and remembrance. |
