Description |
Black straw bonnet type hat with lace and black artificial flowers around the front. Has black silk bow and band and black fabric lining. Acetate ties were added at a later date. Hand sewn from the Victorian era, 1880-1900. This straw hat is from the Carl and Henry Hagen family, donated by Henry's daughter-in-law Dorothy Walker Hagen. Henry Hagen was the son of Carl F. Hagen who immigrated from Germany in 1858 at age 24. Carl married Lisetta Listhartke in 1865 after being wounded at Shiloh during the Civil War. In 1870 the family came to Minnesota and settled on a farm in Sumter Township. They were parents of Henry, Minnie and Fredrica. Carl organized the Sumter Mutual Fire Insurance Company in 1879 and was Secretary until 1910 when son Henry took over. Carl was also instrumental in starting the first Co-operative Creamery in Minnesota at Biscay. Carl died in 1911 and Lisetta in 1930. Henry (1866-1949) and Lena Persuhn (1867-1942) Hagen lived with his mother (Lisetta Listhartke Hagen) on a farm in Sumter Township until 1928 when they moved to Hutchinson and lived on Franklin St. Their children were Lisetta, Wilhelmina, Carl, George, Fredrica, Henry and Alton. Lisetta and George both died in 1918. Alton "Al" Hagen was the husband of Dorothy Walker Hagen (donor of this item) and worked for Dobratz Furniture and was also a funeral director. |
