Kouba "Gold Rush" mural, 1936 |
Description |
Mural painting done by Les C. Kouba in July, 1936 when he was 19 years old. The scene depicts the Gold Rush Days at sunset. From right to left covered wagons and men on horseback approach a man panning for gold at center. On the left is a man cooking at a campfire near a ring of covered wagons. Wood frame. The mural was described in the July 17, 1936 Hutchinson Leader: "Above is a reproduction of the right half of a splendid mural painted by Leslie Kouba, local artist of exceptional ability, which is now in Bolduc's Corner. The complete mural painting is three feet high and 26 feet long and Leslie spent a full week's time in completing the large painting. The cut above shows only half of the mural but gives an excellent idea of the whole. The theme is an original one of the Gold Rush days, and is painted in bright tints to show the scene at sunset. There is an excellent perspective to the mural, especially back through the forest and away for miles down the valley between the mountains at the right hand side of the picture. The picture is worked out in fine and intricate details and is a work worthy of an artist in the full sense of the word. Leslie Kouba has painted a number of other splendid pictures in the pas few months, especially sporting and scenic types. One is now at Al Lake's hamburger shop here in town (1989-0080-001) , there is the big mural at Bolduc's, the entire wall space at Moberg's Tavern has been painted by him, he has a sporting scene at Jack Horejci's cafe in Silver Lake and five modernistic murals at the Silver Lake liquor store. In about two or three weeks Leslie Kouba will leave for the West Coast, planning to spend about two years in Washington state where he will find many ideas for more paintings. The training he received from the Federal Schools has aided him greatly in his work, but he has the natural ability and his finished works show fine technique, finesse and fortell a splendid future." |
