Description |
Crazy quilt lap robe. Embroidery top stitching between each piece. Belonged to Emma Lake. Donated by Emma's daughter Lilas Turman. Emma Chapek Lake was born April 28, 1898 in Hutchinson Township, Bear Lake Community. She was the daughter of Anton & Anna Balek Chapek, the youngest of a family of seven daughters and three sons. She attended Bear Lake School and graduated from Normal Teachers Program in 1916. She taught in rural schools throughout Minnesota for 15 years. In 1931 she married Albert (Al) Lake. They owned and operated Purity White Castle and later Al's Cafe in Hutchinson. She was actively involved in community activities. In 1948 she became Fine Arts Superintendent at the McLeod County Fair and continued in that capacity. She was a charter member of the Burns Manor Auxiliary formed in 1963. She was active with Girl Scouts and the Bloodmobile program. She had a lifetime certificate in the Federated Garden Club as an accredited flower show judge. She was a charter member of the Hutchinson Senior Citizen's Club and was named Outstanding Senior Citizen of McLeod County in 1973 and Woman of the Year in 1972. Emma Chapek Lake died May 16, 1986 at Hutchinson Community Hospital.. |
