Description |
Armand Marseille bisque shoulder head doll with stuffed kid leather body & jointed legs, jointed wood & composition arms. Doll has brown glass sleep eyes with upper lashes, brown wig, open smiling mouth with four upper teeth. Marking: Armand Marseille/Germany/370/A5M. 370 is the mold number and 5 is the shoulder width. Armand Marseille dolls were produced from roughly 1885 until approximately 1930. At the height of their production the company produced over 1,000 doll heads per day. The doll wears a bonnet & dress & slip of lace & ribbon trimmed light green organza, a second green satin half slip, white underpants, white stockings with pink trim and white vinyl shoes with pink laces. Artificial flowers have been added inside the bonnet brim. The outfit is probably not original. The doll belonged to Gertrude Carstens, Glencoe. Donor Lora Elwell grew up in the Carstens family and Gertrude was like an aunt to her. Gertrude willed the doll to Lora who displayed it in her home. Gertrude was unmarried, moved to Minneapolis, and was a day care worker. Gertrude's parents were Arthur & Marie Stolle Carstens and her brothers were Gordon W. and Herbert Carstens. |
