Description |
U.S. Navy black felt armband with gold letters "S P" for Shore Patrol. Worn by Calvin William Miller on his sailor uniform. Calvin, son of Emil and Emily Dolezal Miller, was born on December 21, 1925 on the family farm in Silver Lake MN. He graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1943 and entered active military service in the U.S. Navy on April 26, 1944. He served his country during World War II as a Seaman First Class and received an Honorable Discharge on December 11, 1946. He was stationed at Hawthorne, Nevada, Naval Ammunition Depot, where bombs were armed and driven across mountain roads without head lights (during war time) to California bases. When the United States entered World War II, the Depot became the staging area for bombs, rockets, and ammunition for almost the entire war effort. Employment was at its highest at 5,625 in 1945. Later Calvin Miller served on shore patrol at naval bases near San Francisco and San Diego, California. After the war ended he worked decommissioning Navy war ships in California. He learned welding, hard hat deep sea diving, and later self-contained scuba diving. Calvin married Audrey Wosmek on November 20, 1948 and they had two children Janice and Jeanette. Calvin continued his education and trained as a Chief Boiler Engineer, Plumber, & Welder. He was employed at Kraft Foods, Quade Electric and Krasean Plumbing and Heating in Hutchinson. He was a member of the Minneapolis Plumbing and Heating Union Local #15 and a member of the American Legion Post #96 for 51 years. |
