Wicker trunk |
Description |
Large wicker trunk (trousseau basket) with handles & loop fasteners. Brought from Germany by donor's mother Marie Bunke Luedtke when she came with her family to Ellis Island and then to Wisconsin as an immigrant. Her obituary stated that the year was 1893, with arrival in New York on July 4th. [According to the 1930 census William (b.1875) immigrated in 1891 and Marie (Mary) (b. April 22, 1873) in 1896.] The family spent one year at Merrill Wisconsin, moving the following year to a farm near Hutchinson. Marie was the daughter of Karl and Emilie Bunke and was born April 22, 1873 in Pomerania, Germany. She arrived in America single at about 22 years old and later met her husband William (Wilhelm) A. Luedtke in Hutchinson. They were married June 29, 1900 at the parsonage by Rev. E. G Fritzke, pastor of Peace church, Hutchinson. Soon after their marriage the couple moved into their new home on Second Avenue where Marie died October 2, 1951. The trousseau basket is rare; another is kept under glass at Ellis Island. |
