Army footlocker of 1st Lt. LeRoy Teschendorf of Plato, son of Frank & Mildred Teschendorf. LeRoy was born March 27, 1924 and executed April 21, 1945, five days before Americans took over the concentraton camp. He was on his 49th bombing mission according to information obtained by Senator John McCain. Donor Alfred Burdorf is a cousin to LeRoy: LeRoy's mother and Alfred's father were siblings. The olive green trunk has two leather handles, front latches and could be locked. It was sent home with his belongings following his death. See also the military notebooks "T" volume. LeRoy's diary is in an Air Force Museum in Denver or Salt Lake City. LeRoy Teschendorf served in World War II. In November, 1942 he enlisted in the United States Air Corps and was called to service February 5, 1943. He graduated from the Officers Training and Advanced Bombardier School on December 24, 1943. On July 22, 1944 he was sent to serve his country overseas, as a member of the 97th Bomb Group,14th Bomb Squadron. On his last mission his plane was hit by flak and the crew had to abandon their plane. [Later it was learned it was his 49th mission.] He became missing in action on February 25, 1945 when the B-17 type aircraft of which he was a crew member was shot down by enemy anti-aircraft fire over Linz, Austria. He was taken prisoner by the Germans and confined at the Concentration Camp at Mauthausen, Austria. There he was shot and killed by his captors on April 21, 1945. |
