Dietz "Victor" Lantern |
Description |
Dietz "Victor" kerosene lantern with a clear glass "Dietz Fitzall" globe. Made by Dietz, New York, U.S.A. c.1915-1931. Globe has letter H6 on the reverse side. Lantern has metal frame; square tubes; wire bail handle; latch to lift lid over globe; flat wick screw. The "Victor" was the most popular square tube hot blast lantern and Dietz was the most popular U.S. lantern manufacturer from the 1880's through 1956. Beginning c.1915 the Fitall globe was discontinued and remarketed as the FITZALL from then on. The New York USA stamping indicates this lantern was at the very latest manufactured in 1931 as this was the last date for manufacture in New York. Robert Edwin Dietz first began selling whale oil and camphene lamps and lanterns in 1840 at the age of 22. Robert and his brother Michael patented the first practical flat wick burner especially designed for the then new fuel oil, kerosene, in 1859. |
