Blue ribbon: Thirty-Sixth Annual Fair McLeod County Agricultural Society, 1st Premium, September 8, 9, 10, 11, 1908. L. A. Ritter, Pres., J. A. Lindenberg, Sec. Belonged to H. Hugh Benjamin, grandfather of donor Wesley Benjamin. H. Hugh Benjamin was born in Sparta, Illinois, on December 18, 1862. After living in several states he located in Mankato MN where he married Ella Gertrude Armstrong on July 15, 1885. He came to Hutchinson in 1886 and was employed as a cooper in the Sumner Brothers Shops and later took up plastering and worked at the trade for over 20 years. In 1909 he purchased a farm north of Hutchinson and lived there until his death in 1913. From the small start of one brood hen and one setting of eggs he became interested in chickens and worked with them for the rest of his life. His White Wyandottes were shown at many fairs and poultry shows and took many prizes. He could be found in the poultry barn at the McLeod County Fair every year. He judged many poultry shows and fairs, some as far away as the state of Washington. |
