Description |
Large brown tooled leather covered "Jenny Lind" or "Bread loaf" trunk with two wood slats & casters on the bottom and leather handles on each end. Has a brass lock, metal snaps and hinges and tooled designs on the top and front. Originally had two top leather straps. Inside the cover is a drop-down wooden bin with a decorative colored Victorian front design. A wooden lift-out tray with compartments is inside the trunk itself. The trunk lock was patented May 1854 and the inside tray bolts were patented (No. 25,631) on October 4, 1859 by Garret Cooper of Jersey City NJ. Jenny Lind trunks were popular from 1850-1870 and were also referred to as "stagecoach" trunks as they were also used for stagecoach travel. |
