Description |
No. 5 French made fencing sword with metal crossguard and leather & wire wrap on wooden grip above metal pommel. Marked "Klingenthal" on one side of blade and "Coulaux &..." on the other. Late 19th to early 20th century. At the beginning of the 18th century, King Louis XV decided to create a state-controlled sword manufacturing company in order to limit the imports of Solingen blades to France from Germany. In 1768 a factory was built in a place called Klingenthal (Klingen=blades, thal= valley) and became Manufacture de Klingenthal. Under this name, thousands of blades were produced until the end of the 19th century. Coulaux was the best-known manager of Klingenthal. The Coulaux brothers applied for the job of entrepreneur in February 1801 and the family remained in charge of the management of the Manufacture de Klingenthal until the firm ceased business in 1962. |
