World War II American Campaign service ribbon bar. Awarded to Edward H. Schmidt. Edward H. Schmidt was born January 26, 1915, son of William "Bill" & Minnie Schmidt. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1934. He entered U.S. Army active duty April 17, 1942 and served first as a Cook for 11 months and then with the 35th Field hospital (WWII) in Africa and Italy as a Medical Technician 4th grade. He was wardmaster and supervised the work of 2 men. Gave medicines, shots and pills as directed. Assisted nurses in bathing and feeding patients. Kept temperature books and shot records on patients. Served overseas 27 months and wore 3 battle stars. He was honorably discharged November 24, 1945. The American Campaign bar has center blue stripes with center divided into thirds of red, white & blue. Between the center and the blue edges are stripes in white, black, red and white. The blue color represents the Americas; the central blue, white and red stripes, taken from the American Defense Service Medal ribbon, represents the continuance of American defense after Pearl Harbor. The white and black stripes represent the German part of the conflict on the Atlantic Coast, while the red and white stripes are for the Japanese colors and refer to that part of the conflict on the Pacific Coast. The requirements for the American Campaign Medal were for service within the American Theater between December 7,1941 and March 2, 1946. |
