Petrich who was born September 7, 1891, grew up south of Biscay and served in WWI in France in the military police. The medal depicts a soldier looking at a box car that is carrying another soldier and a horse. The boxcar is marked 40 Hommes 8 Chevaux, which means 40 men or 8 horses. These small cramped French box cars were the familiar mode of transportation to all who traveled from the coast to the trenches during World War I. |
