Consists of a heating pad with holes on one side and a wire handle and a carpet covered foot rest receptacle. Old number 160. The "X-Radium" Foot Warmer was listed in the July 1904 Hardware Dealers Magazine, vol. 22, p. 250: "The Novelty Mfg Co., Jackson, Mich. are placing on the market the X-Radium Foot Warmer, illustrated. It consists of two parts, the heating pad of stamped steel, filled with X-Radium, a substance which has the same affinity for heat as a sponge has for water. The second part is a stamped steel receiver covered with plush, in which the heating pad is placed and which serves as a foot rest. The device is nickel plated, 10 inches long, 6 1/2 inches wide and 4 inches high. To prepare for use the pad is placed upon the top of a hot stove for 20 minutes, then it is put in the footrest, where it will retain its heat for two to three hours. The makers state that it eliminated the necessity of burning carbons, briquettes, charcoal, gasoline, kerosene, etc. and that there is no smoke, odor, or danger of burning robes or shoes. The warmer is especially adapted for use by physicians, chauffeurs, shoppers, rural mail carriers, drivers of carriages, milk, grocery and delivery wagons, sleighs, etc." From Cycle and Automobile Trade Journal October 1, 1904, Vol. 9 No. 4 p.206: "The X-Radium Foot Warmer. Novelty Mfg. Co. of Jackson, Mich. have on the market a foot warmer for automobiles which they call the "X-Radium". One of its chief advantages is the fact that it requires no fuel. The reason for this is that the heating pad consists of a stamped steel receptacle filled with a substance which will attract to itself heat rays and retain the heat attracted for several hours. The substance they call "X-Radium". The warmer consists of the heat pad and a suitab le frame for holding the same, which also serves as a foot rest. The foot rest is covered with carpet or plush and is placed at a convenient angle for resting the feet upon it. Heat is obtained by placing the heat pad on a stove for about twenty minutes before going out for a ride. The foot warmer will hold the heat for from 2 to 3 hours. The device measures 10 inches long, 6 1/2 inches wide and 4 high. It weighs 10 lbs and lists at $1.50, nickel plated. Munsey's Magazine, Vol. 30, October 1903 to March 1904 had an advertisement for an X-Radium Heater used on a table as a food warmer like a chafing dish heater. [The material in the heating pad looks suspiciously like brick.] |
