Showdowbox containing hair art floral arrangement |
Description |
Shadowbox containing a Victorian hair art floral arrangement. Made of brown human hair from William Bonniwell, grandfather of H. H. Bonniwell. Three dimensional coiled wire wrapped with hair. Tan & gilt frame with glass; tan organdy lining; wooden box stenciled "laundry starch, Eddy & Eddy". Victorian hair art was once a popular medium for women's handiwork to create jewelry, watchfobs and mourning wreaths. Hair served as a tangible remembrance of someone. Close friends exchanged hair as tokens of friendship. Hair was also sometimes taken after a person's death as a means of honor and remembrance. |
