Seed planter |
Description |
Vintage hand held corn/grain planter with wooden handles and metal grain compartment. Seeding is controlled by a push-pull action of the wooden handles which releases the seeds from the storage hopper. Metal used appears to be stove pipe. Was painted red. Label " The Acme with Pumpkin Seed Attachment. Patented September 11, 1900." Belonged to Fred & Elsie Fruetel Birkholz or Fred's parents Herman & Ottillie Paul Birkholz. Donor notes: The hand planters were used by very early settlers. As small plots of land were cleared these planters were used to plant corn, garden varieties of peas, and beans. After the horse drawn corn planter was put in use the hand planter was used to replant the field corn if there was poor germination. It was also used to plant sweet corn for family use in small plots. |
