Description |
Rectangular sugar bowl with earred handles. Tan with red design. Belonged to Sam Anderson, Sr. [& wife Abby Hutchinson Anderson]. Missing lid. Donated by their daughter Elizabeth Anderson Wakefield. Samuel G. Anderson was born in 1846, son of Ezra S. and Sarah Anderson. He came to Indiana in 1862 and Ohio in 1863. When he enlisted in the Union Army in 1864 he was the youngest man in his company. In 1866 he came to St. Paul where he became clerk on a steamboat. After learning the miller's trade he went to Greenleaf where he acquired a half interest in a mill. In 1867 he came to Hutchinson where he started a mill and made the first barrel of flour in Hutchinson. In 1873 he started the Hutchinson Enterprise and operated it for six years. Then he engaged in farming on 320 acres in Section 7, Hassan Valley Twp. He was also involved in prospecting and in Minnesota politics. On April 9, 1873 he married Abby Hutchinson, only daughter of Asa B. Hutchinson. She died January 7, 1884. Following her death he was assistant superintendent of the Senate document room in Washington DC. In 1905 he married E. W. Erway. Sam Anderson Sr. died in 1918. |
