Diamond Willow cane |
Description |
Diamond Willow carved cane with nearly continuous knots along the length. Varnish finish. No handle, no tip. When asked about the Diamond Willow carving Vernon stated it was something he started in his spare time as he liked to work with his hands and over the years made many various pieces from small objects to lamps and canes. Diamond Willow Carving is almost a lost art. Diamond Willow is a shrub that grows in wet areas as it needs to keep its "feet" wet. It is recognized by the leaves on the shrub. The bark is peeled off and the beautiful pattern is revealed. The willow that Vernon gathered was found at Stoney Point on the Crow River. Stoney Point was an area on the south side of the Crow River. Houses now stand where the willows grew and the fishing hole of the Brandt "kids" is no longer there and the willow are no longer there. If you would start at the Museum and head south, crossing the bridge and as you cross look to your right or west. The area on the south side of the river was called Stoney Point. |
