Steelyard balance scale |
Description |
Antique portable steelyard balance scale. A forged iron balance consisting of a scaled arm suspended off center, hooks at the shorter end on which to hang the object being weighed and a counterbalance at the longer end that can be moved to find the weight. The moveable weight for this scale is missing. Steelyards were used for weighing just about anything on the farm or by tradesmen. There was simply no better choice for weighing things in the early days of our country (1750-1860s). This steelyard was designed so that it could be turned over for use with heavier or lighter loads. This one is calibrated for 0 to 15 pounds on one side and 15 to 50 pounds on the other side. Marked "J. Beddows, 50, Warranted" on the hook end. Internet search result: In the 1834 History, Gazetteer and Directory of Staffordshire by William White, p. 445, a John Beddows, Ryecroft Street, was listed under Steelyard & Scale beam Manufrs. |
