Donor notes: Found in the attic when the Roach family purchased the home at 1015 Ford Ave, Glencoe, from the Jay Greaves family in October, 1949. Jay Greaves was born in 1878 to J. J. & Ida Greaves. He studied medicine at the U. of Minnesota, graduating as a doctor of medicine c.1910. When he came back to Glencoe to set up his practice, the family drug store was short a pharmacist so he filled in there. Telephones had just recently come to Glencoe and the switchboard was located in the back room of the drug store. Jay got involved with building the phone system and eventually owning and managing the McLeod Telephone Company until his death in 1940. The Greaves Drug Store was located in the Greaves Building on the north side of Franklin Avenue (now 10th St.) in the middle of the 700 block. It was just west of the Brechet building. The drug store was sold to the Earl Barnum family c.1930s. |
