Antique dental shell crown press of heavy cast iron made by W.M. Sharp Co. for S. Eldred Gilbert Dental Mfg. Co., Philadelphia, PA. Patented 1901. Double screw; tandem handle. The number "658" is incised on the top of the screw. It was used to form hollow metal shells that would be used by a dentist as temporary crowns, for those with the means to afford gold or porcelain permanent crowns. It consisted of a row of thirteen graduated pins mounted to a driving plate, each with a mating hole in the lower forming plate. The different size pins corresponded to the various sizes of teeth. Moves freely up and down. Screw down holes on each side to attach to a table. Metal plate screwed into the top of the heavy iron frame shows maker's mark for The W.M. Sharp Mfg Co. |
