Description |
Large framed charcoal drawing of an unidentified woman. Found by the donors with other framed items in the upper story of 129 E. Main Street, Silver Lake, MN. Probably belonged to Anton J. & Catherine (Katrine) Domagalski who lived above the A. J. Domagalski Dry Goods and Grocery operated in the building at that address. The Church of St. Adalbert was located across the street. Wood frame with floral motif. The woman pictured is probably either Anton's mother Agnes Novicke Domagalski (1847-1912) or Catherine's mother Victoria Sopkowiak Ziemba (1860- ) . Anton (Anthony) John Domagalski was born May 24, 1885, son of Peter & Agnes Nowicki (Novicke) Domagalski. Anton is listed as store proprietor in the 1920, 1930, & 1940 censuses. On May 28, 1912 Anton married Catherine (Katrine) Ziemba, daughter of John B. (1838-1923) & Victoria (1860- ) Sopkowiak Ziemba. Catherine was born c.1891. Catherine is listed as a dressmaker in the 1910 census. Their children were Rita who married George Hammel in 1940 and resided in Washington D.C. and Ernest who was killed in WWII. Anthony Domagalski died October 29, 1945 in Los Angeles, CA and Catherine died May 8, 1952 in Monterey County, CA. Anton's father Peter Domagalski was born in Poland near Posen on June 24, 1838. He came to America alone about 1871 and after establishing a home returned to the old country for his wife in about 1876. They resided in Philadelphia, PA for about 3 years, then came to Chaska, MN and after a short residence there, came to Silver Lake, MN in 1879. Peter went into business and for two years conducted a saloon in the building built by M. Makowski, better remembered as the J. J. Mikesh building. He later disposed of this business and for a number of years lived on a farm in Hale Township. He afterwards returned to town and engaged in the general merchandise business which he continued until 1920 when he turned the store over to his son Anthony. |
