Description |
Wood chisel handle with no makers mark. Has "D. Adams" stamped in handle. David A. Adams was one of McLeod county's earliest settlers. He was born February 26, 1838 in Norfolk County, England. He received a common-school education and when thirteen he was apprenticed to a carpenter. When he was between sixteen & seventeen years of age his master gave him his time and he embarked at Liverpool on October 14, 1854 for America. In 1855 he came to Chicago and six weeks later to Minnesota and located near Faribault where he engaged in carpentering. In July 1857 he came to McLeod County with the William Cook family. The next summer he moved to a farm south of Hutchinson where he remained until the Indian outbreak of 1862 when he moved into the village and helped to defend it. He returned to Rice County and in 1864 enlisted in Company B, First Minnesota Infantry, and fought in the Civil War. In the summer of 1866 he returned to Hutchinson and took an 80 acre farm on section 24, Lynn Township and later lived in section 13, Lynn Township. In 1874 he moved into Hutchinson where he engaged in the real estate and loan business. Mr. Adams was one of the organizers of Lynn township and the first justice of the peace there. In 1871 he was elected to the State Legislature. He was one of the first board of village trustees of Hutchinson and was village recorder for Hutchinson. He erected the first brick residence in Hutchinson and was one of the organizers of the Bank of Hutchinson. He served on numerous boards and committees. On May 24, 1868 he married Annie M. Durant and the couple had five children. David A. Adams died June 13, 1911. |
