Black & white photograph of Company 780-44, Regiment 5, Battalion 17, U.S. Naval Training Center, Farragut, Idaho, August 19, 1944. Donald Ostlie is 4th from left in 3rd row from top. Donald Ostlie was born June 20, 1926 in Bergen Township, McLeod County, son of Lars & Clara Overvig Ostlie. Donald enlisted in the Navy on June 26, 1944 and trained at Farragut, Idaho. He was sent over with the amphibious forces to fight in WWII in the South Pacific at Okinawa and Iwo Jima and served on USS LCI 809 (Landing Craft Infantry). He was one of many who landed in Japan on V-Day. He was honorably discharged June 6, 1946 with Gunner's Mate Third Class rank. He married Stella Richter on October 24, 1947 and died June 5, 2002. |
