Sepia toned early photograph of the Hutchinson town square (Central Park/Library Square) c. 1890, looking to the northeast. The Sivright (later Bretzke) building is in the upper left. A board walk in the foreground, small round bandstand, young trees, and people on benches in the park can be seen. Mounted on photo board with name Lewis Merrill on the back. (Harrington-Merrill Collection) Was the site of the stockade where the settlers successfully defended the town from Indian attack. The small trees are mostly boxelders, and barrels were placed around scotch pines in an unsuccessful effort to help them grow. |
