Herbert Lester Pugh was born in July of 1880 in Minnesota to North Pugh. North had been born in Ohio. During the census that was taken in 1900, Herbert was living in Hutchinson with his father and his older siblings; Arthur, Norra, Elmo, and his younger siblings; Louis, Dick, and Harry. In that year Herbert was nineteen years old, attending school and also working as a deliverer. A census taken in 1905 showed the twenty-three year old living in St. Paul. Herbert Pugh registered for the draft for World War I on September 11, 1918. He lived at 1800 East 24th Street in Minneapolis when he completed the draft card. He was working as a brakeman at the Chicago, Minneapolis & St. Paul Railroad. He listed his nearest relative as his father, Johan Pugh in Miles City, Montana. He listed his age as thirty-eight. His height is described as medium and his build as slender. He had green eyes and grey hair. In the 1920 census, according to the Ancestry website, Herbert L. Pugh was a thirty-eight year old widower. He still lived on 24th Street East in Minneapolis as a lodger in the home of James and Jennie Pirie. He worked as a conductor on the steam railroad. During the census in 1930, Herbert was working as a freight conductor for the steam railroad. He was married to Rose and they had two children, Fred and Edith. The family lived in a rented home on 30th Avenue South in Minneapolis. The 1940 census recorded that in 1935 Herbert was a brakeman for the railroad. When the census was taken he was fifty-eight years old and lived on Greeley Avenue in Glencoe. He was still married to Rose. He registered for the draft during World War II as Herbert Lester Pugh. He was sixty years old when the war started and listed his address as 1305 Greeley Avenue in Glencoe. He was five feet tall and weighed one hundred forty-eight pounds. His eyes were blue and his hair was gray. A death record shows that Herbert L. Pugh, whose mother’s maiden name was Snyder, died on February 9, 1963. He had been collecting social security through the railroad board. |
