American House (3rd), Glencoe, c. 1881 |
Description |
Scanned sepia toned photograph of the third American House (hotel) in Glencoe. Completed in November, 1881 with Col. J. C. Edson, proprietor and L. N. Bronson, manager. The main building was 90'x30', three stories high and the two story addition was 30'x40'. The veranda projected around the south and east sides with the main entrance about half way up the south side on Liberty Street. The hotel featured a spacious hallway, office, well-furnished washroom, dining room with daily bill of fare, sample-room (for traveling men), a gentlemen's reception room, billiard hall (with two Monarch billiard tables by J. M. Brunswick Co), parlors, reception rooms, bridal suites, and sleeping rooms. Every room was carpeted, furnished with black walnut bedsteads and supplied with wire and woolen mattresses. These accommodations were advertised as available at reasonable rates, as the best house on the Hastings & Dakota railroad, and as the most substantial building in Glencoe. Probably photographed by Nelson Hassan. Scanned by Nelson Photography, Glencoe. |
