Dr. John Benjamin |
Description |
Sepia toned photograph of Dr. John Benjamin. Dr. John Benjamin (1823-1904) was born in England. He traveled by train to St. Paul, by boat to Carver, and by ox team to Hutchinson, arriving in 1857. Shortly before the Dakota conflict he built a home a few miles north of town. Food was scarce among the Indians and the Benjamins contributed to the support of twelve braves, becoming well acquainted with several of them, especially Little Crow, their chief. Warned of imminent hostilities, the family took refuge in the stockade and Dr. Benjamin, the only surgeon, took charge of the sick and wounded. The Benjamin home became the first to be set ablaze by the Indians. |
