Braun's Dry Goods Store, Hutchinson MN |
Description |
Black & white photograph, taken about 1930, showing the interior of Braun's Dry Goods Store with a wooden staircase leading to a spindle-railed balcony second floor. Bolts and rolls of fabric on shelves. Note the tin ceiling and the pulley-operated money handling system. The Braun Department Store is directly linked to the pioneer business life of Hutchinson through its proprietor Henry Braun, Jr., a civic leader who served as mayor, as a fireman, and on many boards. The store was first located at 128, and later at 46-50 Main Street South until it closed in 1990. In 1884, at age 13, Braun apprenticed in the Goodnow & Ives store, then founded his own firm in 1895 with his father-in-law A.W. Sowle as a partner. Known until 1917 as Braun and Sowle, its departments included dry goods, men's furnishings, ladies' ready-to-wear, millinery, children's shoes, cloaks, carpets, draperies, and crockery. The pulley-operated money handling system was used to place customer payments into a canister attached to a cable, then sent to second floor cashier's office. Hand printed in black ink on the reverse side is Braun's Dry Goods. |
