1942 WPA Mural Singers, Indians, Stockade |
Description |
Digital color photograph of the 1942 WPA mural named "Singers, Indians, Stockade" by its Minnesota artist Elsa Jemne. It is displayed at the Hutchinson, MN Post Office. At the left it depicts Martha Harrington Merrill as a little girl peeking out of a hole in the stockade during the 1862 Dakota Conflict. Founding musicians John, Judson, and Asa Hutchinson appear in the center, and Dakota Indians torching Hutchinson's first school building are seen at right. The WPA (1935-1943), a New Deal agency, meant jobs for millions of people, including artists. |
