Donor notes: "John Henry Albers was born in Germany in 1846 and came to America in 1869 at the age of 22. He settled in Glencoe in 1878 and lived there until his death at the age of 80. Mr. Albers bought a furniture business in 1886 which led him to become a true craftsman in such areas as cabinet making, casket making, and the building of church altars. He was very active in the civic affairs of his community, serving as McLeod County Treasurer from 1902-1911 and was one of the organizers of Glencoe Butter and Produce Company.
One very beautiful example of his fine work remains with us today-namely the exquisite wood main and side altars of Saint Pius Catholic Church (Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in 1890 when they were built). It is a tribute to John Albers craftsmanship and to the care they have received over the years that these altars remain as beautiful today as when they were built."
