Map of early trails in McLeod County, Minnesota with names of lakes and towns. Hand-drawn on brown wrapping paper with red & blue crayon. Unknown artist and origin.
Information accompanying the map:
Trail from New Auburn was called the Red River Cart Trail. In the summer time it was traveled by way of Sauk Center, Lake Kandiyohi, by Hutchinson to the town now called St. Peter. Notice that many of the trails pass through Hutchinson. One reason was that Hutchinson was well located; it was known for fur traders and trappers.
No. 7 trail was the military road from Fort Snelling to Fort Abercrombie. This was also known as the Hutchinson and Watertown Road.
Another trail was known as the Glencoe and Carver Road. It was a military road from Fort Snelling through Shakopee, Carver & Glencoe on the way to Fort Ridgely.
Removed from wooden top & bottom slats & trimmed.
